SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The work week started with dry skies and warm temperatures in southeast KELOLAND. But the summer didn’t start that way.

Sioux Falls had its second wettest June on record with 11.2 inches of rain. That heavy rain has carried Sioux Falls almost to the top 25 wettest summers.

Here’s a look at what’s needed to climb the ladder of wettest summers in Sioux Falls.Just 17 hundredths will get us to the 25th wettest, while under an inch and we’ll crack the top 20.To get into the top five would require a wet pattern or locally heavy rainfall due to moisture being back in the atmosphere. While it’s possible, at this point and time I would consider it unlikely.

But if you travel west, it’s a different story, it’s been a much drier summer in western South Dakota.

In fact, the Rapid City airport is at its third driest summer so far with a little over 2.5″ of rain. The hit-and-miss rain in western South Dakota will continue over the next couple of days, it’s just a matter of where it falls.

With less than a week left in meteorological summer, we’ll see how both cities fare..
