SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — An event attracting artists from across the region is set to make its return to Sioux Falls.

The flow of traffic outside the Washington Pavilion will come to a halt this weekend, replaced by thousands of shuffling feet.

How you can help fight hunger

“Sidewalk Arts Festival is a celebration of the arts, so for one day only on September 7th, the streets surrounding the Washington Pavilion are filled with artists and vendors, food, crafts, fine arts, all wonderful things,” Washington Pavilion Development Coordinator Katharine Hults said.

Katharine Hults is the development coordinator at the Washington Pavilion, and says more than 260 vendors will attend this year’s Sidewalk Arts Festival.

“We’ve got vendors who’ve been coming here for 20-plus years, we’ve also got a ton of new vendors this year, so you might see something that you’ve been seeing forever, it’s a standard favorite, but you might find your new favorite thing also,” Hults said.

“You get visual art from local artists, you get arts organizations like The Premiere Playhouse who are bringing live entertainment to the area, but then you also have folks doing pottery and things of that sort so it’s kind of an opportunity to see a little bit of everything,” The Premiere Playhouse Managing Artistic Director Oliver Mayes said.

Oliver Mayes is with The Premiere Playhouse in downtown Sioux Falls. The organization will be selling tickets for the upcoming season and supplying some entertainment during the festival.

“We’re also, on the inside of the Washington Pavilion, hosting our festival of new plays where you’ll see four new plays by local writers here in Sioux Falls,” Mayes said.

In addition to arts and entertainment, the Sidewalk Arts Festival is one of the biggest fundraisers for the Washington Pavilion.

“It helps support kind of all of our programs, so our education program, science center, visual arts center, just everything we do to kind of help uplift the community,” Hults said.

And it’s all about supporting local artists.

“Why wouldn’t you come? It’s so fun, it’s such a great day and there’s literally something for everyone,” Hults said.

The Sidewalk Arts Festival is Saturday from 9:00 to 5:00 in downtown Sioux Falls. Admission is free.
