SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — For many people, Halloween is about dressing up and collecting as much candy as you can, but for one Sioux Falls family, it is so much more.

Each year hundreds of people show up to Grandma Lu’s Hallow.

“Grandma Lu’s Hallow is a family-run and volunteer-run neighborhood haunt. You come to our house, we give you candy. We have an interactive display. It’s not just something to look at. We have live actors,” Jana Keller said.

This year’s theme is Haunted Nursery, so if you’re one of the people that gets creeped out by dolls, you’re in for a scare.

“We kind of scare to meet your needs. If we have a little child who’s here and he or she’s obviously scared, we’re going to make it a very pleasant experience for them. Whereas if we have some teenagers that come and they think that nothing’s going to scare me, we’re going to try to let them have it,” Keller said.

While trick-or-treaters may think this is even cooler than king-sized candy bars, it has a deeper meaning for the Keller family.

“This event is in memory of my mom, Lu Beaner. Hence Grandma Lu. She just really loved Halloween and instilled in her whole family a love of Halloween,” Keller said.

Grandma Lu’s love for Halloween is something her family will always remember her, and they hope that when people see the haunted display, they’ll also be thinking of her.

“People are curious about Grandma Lu. They’ll see her picture or they’ll say, are you Grandma Lu? And that gives me the opportunity to tell them about her,” Keller said.

The Keller family and friends plan to carry on Lu’s legacy for the years to come.

“This is like my Christmas really. And it’s, to me, it’s all about love. Love of my mom, love for my son, because we do this together, and love of Halloween and my community,” Keller said.

Grandma Lu’s Hallow is free to the public and it will be open this Friday and Saturday, along with Halloween.
