SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Pheasant hunting widows will have a special place to roost this weekend in Sioux Falls.

The KELOLAND Living Arts and Crafts Show gets underway Friday drawing vendors from throughout the region selling their hand-crafted items.

A couple from northwest Iowa was the first of the vendors to claim their spot at the Ramkota Exhibit Hall.

Is there enough land to hunt pheasants in South Dakota?

Ruth and Ron Ruba wanted to beat the rush of vendors arriving for the KELOLAND Living Arts & Crafts Show because they need the space to maneuver their 32-foot-long trailer into a corner of the Ramkota Exhibit Hall.

“He’s a retired farmer, so he knows how to back stuff up,” Ruth Ruba of Remsen, IA said.

The Rubas run a quilting and embroidery business in Remsen, Iowa and are turning their trailer into a pop-up shop over the next couple of days.

“We’re selling pot holders and flour sack towels that are matching, we have quilts, adult throw quilts and kids quilts, we have table runners, we have a few wall hangers,” Ruba said.

The Rubas have plenty of room for setup before the 30-thousand-square-foot exhibit hall fills with other vendors and shoppers.

“So for us, here, being able to utilize to the fullest, is really exciting because we don’t get that opportunity very often,” Best Western Ramkota District Director of Sales & Marketing McKenzie Speck said.

Keeping their products affordable for their customers has been a challenge for the Rubas in this time of high inflation.

“My costs have gone up and we’ve tried to keep our prices down so it doesn’t interfere with our sales. But we can tell it because some of the sales have been down a little bit this year,” Ruba said.

Ruba says it’s always hard to predict how sales will go during any show they attend. But she says the KELOLAND Living Arts and Crafts Show is their favorite because of how it’s run and because of the people they meet.

“It’ll be busy. It’s always been a good show and I’m sure it will be this weekend,” Ruba said.

The KELOLAND Living Arts & Crafts Show gets underway at noon Friday in the Ramkota Exhibit Hall and runs through Saturday.
