SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — We’ve had plenty of rain in central and eastern KELOLAND over the past month. Of course, some have received more than others, one area that could use some rain is the Hills of western South Dakota.

Sanford Health announces possible merger

Scattered rain showed up this morning in southeast KELOLAND. Some locally heavy downpours occurred, but a lot of it was short-lived. These have been hitting areas that have been getting hit over the past month.

This graphic shows the percentage of rainfall compared to climate average.

As I mentioned, many in central and eastern KELOLAND have been getting the rain but western South Dakota hasn’t.

Notice parts of western and southwest South Dakota have only received around half of their average rainfall over the past 30 days.

Keep in mind, western South Dakota will have a chance at 100 degree heat this weekend. This will aid in drawing moisture out of the ground and the low humidity in the west won’t help either.

The dry ground and low humidity this weekend will ramp up the fire danger for the Hills of western South Dakota. So, this is an area that could use some rain.

But that rain will be hard to come by for a while in the west.
