SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The school year is coming to an end across KELOLAND and summer is quickly approaching, which means the return of Wild Water West. The Sioux Falls water park opens for the season this weekend.

The water is still and the lounge chairs are stacked right now at Wild Water West but come May 25th, this water park will be alive with excitement. And staff members are looking forward to opening day.

“The week building up is extremely stressful, tensions are high,” Colter Quinn, aquatic director at Wild Water West, said. “I mean, obviously we want to get it perfect for everybody but at the end it’s just a huge sigh of relief.”

“Just being out here and seeing everybody have fun and seeing the kids have fun while they work,” Corrine Regnier, Wild Water West office manager, said. “It’s rewarding to know that everybody is coming here and having fun and that we’re kind of in the background of that making it happen.”

Visitors to Wild Water West have come to love the big slides, lazy river and wave pool but there are a few new additions to look out for this summer.

“We’ve updated our mini golf, we’re working on a brand new bar that we’re building, we’re changing up our gift shop, we’ve got some new pool animals that are really cool,” Colter said. “You know, we’re trying to give it a little facelift.”

Little changes they hope guests will appreciate.

“I hope that they love all of our new additions,” Regnier said. “I think that the new lifeguard tower, people will like having kind of easy access to the lifeguards if they need it.”

And speaking of lifeguards, Wild Water West will have plenty on hand to make sure everyone is safe.

“I think I had over 120 applications come through for lifeguards, which is absolutely insane,” Colter said. “I think right now we’re sitting at 98 to 100 lifeguards which is absolutely phenomenal.”

A summer of safe fun on the water awaits.

“I’ve heard a lot of things and it’s going to be super hot this summer so I’m hoping that everyone just comes out and enjoys their time,” Colter said.

Wild Water West will open at 11 a.m. on Saturday and run daily until 8 p.m. through Labor Day Weekend.
